Women in the Spotlight – SARAH BLACKWOOD (WALK OFF THE EARTH)

Some of our favourite musicians have started out as little-known, unsigned bands. Some of them still are! With this in mind, here is a place for us to promote the artists you just have to check out. Give them a listen and then let us know what you think.

Throughout the month of March the Solo Armada is celebrating International Women’s Day (8th March) by highlighting female singer/songwriters and bands that excite us all through their lyrics and music. Follow Solo Armada social media on:

Sarah Blackwood is a woman that does not hold back. Having been part of and toured extensively with band The Creepshow from 2006 – 2012, Sarah also found time to release two solo albums and a live album which she released through her own record label, 2 SONG RECORDS. Sarah’s solo albums which are influenced by acoustic, folk and rock were an alternative sound to those of the punk rock sound of The Creepshow.

Constantly working with different musicians for her live shows and recordings, you never knew who Sarah would show up and play with. In early 2012, Sarah joined Walk Off The Earth appearing in a live YouTube video covering Gotye’s, ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ where all five members of the band played different sections of the same guitar simultaneously. The video exploded and gathered over 180 million views.

Over the years Sarah, alongside other WOTE band members, Gianni, Joel, Marshall & Mike have produced unforgettable covers (sometimes utilising objects you never thought would be considered a musical instrument) and original songs using social media to their advantage and creating interesting and captivating music videos. Songs including, ‘Red Hands’, ‘Fire In My Soul’ & ‘Rule The World’  which went multi-platinum in Canada. They have sold out venues across the globe, from Red Rocks to Wembley, and collaborated with some of the biggest artists in the world such as Keith Urban, Snoop Dogg, Nicky Romero, & Steve Aoki.

In 2018, the band won a Streamy Award for Best Cover Song with their interpretation of Maroon Five’s “Girls Like You.” They also released a holiday EP, Subscribe to the Holidays, that charted as the #1 independent release in Canada for the last week of November. Both works are natural fits in the band’s wide-ranging and ever-growing repertoire, and tease their big plans for 2019.

However, in late 2018 the band faced a major and unexpected loss with the sudden death of band member Mike “Beard Guy” Taylor. Mike’s incredible ability behind the keys gave the band a sturdy foundation to soar and create. In the wake of Mike’s passing, and with much difficult consideration, the band decided to move forward and use the opportunity to honour and share the extraordinary legacy Mike left behind.

The continued chemistry between band members Gianni, Sarah, Joel, and Marshall is undeniable. With Joel’s driving and prolific percussion work and Gianni, Sarah, and Marshall’s captivating vocal styling and melodic arrangements, 2019 will be a year full of new and original music from the band. Their independent spirit, unstoppable work ethic, and awe-inspiring creativity has catapulted Walk Off the Earth into new and uncharted waters with only bigger and better things on the horizon.
